FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
C&O Railway Heritage Center in Clifton Forge, Virginia.
We’re constantly working on ways to return steam locomotive 614 to active service. However, the process to do so, can take many years of planning. To return 614 to service will require doing a full FRA ” work-up” so that she complies with the newly created Federal Railroad Administration rules governing steam locomotives which became effective after 614’s last service in 1998. This work up will cost approximately $ 1 million dollars and take an estimated 18 months to complete. We are constantly on the look out for the proper opportunity that will allow 614 to operate in a scenario that will justify this large investment and when it occurs, we will make the investment needed to return her to service. In other words, there’s no sense investing all that money unless there’s a place she can run and generate sufficient revenues to justify that investment. 614 will remain on display at the C&O Railway Heritage Center in Clifton Forge,Va. until such a time she is called back to duty. When an excursion, public trip or appearance is announced, information will be posted on this website first!
